Snowshoes

May 11th, 2008

This beautiful black dog is a Puggle. Puggles are Beagle + Pug mixes. They tend to have hound traits (PREY DRIVE!) and an elongated snout which means they tolerate heat. They can be great running companions and generally they also love to play fetch and swim.

These dogs do have a downside- they are NOT pugs. They like to exercise. They will roam if not trained. they also will bay (PREY DRIVE). They can be escape artists and will have boundless energy long after my pugs have gotten fat.

Puggle puppies are adorable- but remember, dogs are for life. If you want a couch potato, rescue a senior dog who would be happy to dent your furniture for the rest of its life. If you want a playmate who is as active as the athletic you, with the easy-going personality of a pug, adopt a puggle. You can find your very own puggle at your local shelter or rescue group (and it might even be potty trained!)

Kiwis are Fuzzy!

May 10th, 2008

There is a famous pug in central Texas. Her name is Kiwi and she is the envy of all humans who actually want to train their dogs to do… anything. Kiwi does agility. Kiwi does a hula dance. Kiwi wears outrageous costumes. Kiwi is also a little enforcer and gets in all sorts of trouble when her person isn’t watching.

Look at that face- you can see that she’s trouble…

Pug Vader

If I were a Jedi, and this was a Sith Lord- I think I would just hug it. Now those are some extreme Jedi powers.

Venus: The Fly Trap

May 8th, 2008

Every once in awhile we want to feature a puggie that is currently in foster care. This little beauty is Venus. Venus is a great example of the work DFW Pug Rescue undertakes when they bring in their pugs. Venus came into rescue and was heart worm positive. She also has a collapsing trachea, a degenerative spinal column disease- and she is deaf!

Even with all of her ailments, Venus is a real trooper. She will wear doggie diapers so she doesn’t have accidents, she will scream if she needs something and she will follow you around the house watching you like a hawk.

Venus is adult heart worm negative after several months of being on heartworm preventative. She was the worst case of heart worms our rescue vet had ever seen.

If you would like to know more about Venus, visit her link at Pugs in Austin. If you would like to check out other available dogs for adoption, check out DFW Pug Rescue.

Who Me? I didn’t pee on the floor…

Professor Sebastian Franklin Bean says… “Who me…. I most certainly did NOT pee on the floor. It must have been the chinchilla. I was with the Dinosaur in the Living Room with the Leash!”

Give the Chubbs Some Love

May 6th, 2008

Pugs have a tendency to get fat. Really. REALLY. FAT. They love food. They love to sleep. Did I mention they love food?

But we can’t put this all on the pugs- sure they love to eat and sleep (how is this different from the rest of us?) We as pug owners just want to keep our little snorty puggie happy- so we feed them. And Feed Them. And we win awards during the Pug Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies as the “Best Dang Owner in the World.”

But really- we just have a fat pug.

I just want to give this chubbs some good squish time- before and after I take it for a walk!

Dejected

May 5th, 2008

Almost every time a person unfamiliar with pugs sees one of the Daily Pugs in action, they appear startled and exclaim- “How is that even a dog?” How indeed, my friend, how indeed.

What other dog breed will sit back on their tail, with their gut hanging out, and their head sagging to the floor? If there is any inspiration for Eeyore, it must be a pug.

Old and Beautiful

May 4th, 2008

There is nothing more satisfying than a beautiful, old, laid-back pug. This is Otis, an alumni rescue of DFW Pug Rescue. Otis came in as a bonded pair with his “sister” Missy. When rescue took Otis in, they were told he did not like males and could be aggressive.

Okay- you are looking at the same dog I am right?

Not only was Otis the most laid back older gent to come through rescue, he also didn’t bark or move. that is unless you moved and he had to change sleeping positions.

He and his sister were adopted by a great couple who appreciated a little maturity and experience over flash and glamor.

Pugkin Pugs

May 3rd, 2008

The most appropriate costume for a pug

Each year over hundreds of dogs around the country are dressed up in a costume for Halloween. In Austin, Texas over 100 compete each year at the Great Pugkin Fest for top honors.

There are few costumes that would fit a pug- who are generally fat, globular, chubby or perhaps beefy… few costumes except the Pugkin of course.

Orange and round?

Perfect.

Some dogs were meant to…

Sebastian finds the softest bed in the house

Some dogs were bred to chase rats. Some were bred to take down lions. Some dogs were bred to be a hunting companion, to swim in icy cold waters, or to protect it’s humans. Pugs though? Pugs were bred to find the softest spot in the house and to sleep until it’s humans came to fetch them for dinner time.

In some cases, the softest spot in the house is on top of a giant Eeyore stuffed toy.
